I just watched Elizabeth Gilbert’s Ted talk. She talked a lot about how we need to separate our writerly self from the “thing” that will occasionally come through that is brilliant  and inspired. How its important that we know that this “thing” is not us. That the ancient Greeks called this thing genius-and it was more like a little creature that lived in the walls of the creative person. The individual couldn’t really take credit for their amazing “genius” but neither could they entirely take the blame for a lame “genius.” The creative person just needed to show up and do their job.

So, I am sending out an inviting photo to see if I can encourage a little genius creature to come to my house. Look, its sunny! And I have green tea! And there are beautiful trees to look at! Come to my house little buddy-lets work on this thing together.

If this makes you happy, then you should be overjoyed to know that I’m on Facebook and Instagram and Twitter and even Pinterest!

I love the idea of separating the writer from self. A great way to take the pressure off. If he shows up at your house, will you send him my way next?

  2. Hi there! I could have sworn I’ve been to this website before but after looking at some of the articles
I realized it’s new to me. Nonetheless, I’m certainly happy I found it
and I’ll be bookmarking it and checking back often!
